WWE Likely to Break Many Records

The WWE UK PPV is setting records thanks to the high demand for tickets and high prices for seats. While the WWE hasn’t announced any matches for its Clash at the Castle premium event scheduled to take place at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on 3 September, Dave Meltzer reports the ticket sales have been robust, despite the show not selling out early as expected:

Still, WWE officials noted to us that they were very happy with the sales numbers, noting the show will do the largest non-WrestleMania gate in the history of pro wrestling and actually beat most WrestleManias for that matter.

As noted in a previous article on why the WWE had to move Money in the Bank from a stadium to a smaller venue, WWE President Nick Khan is likely going to evaluate what went wrong. Looking at Khan’s success, he seems like the kind of person who learns from missteps.

Longtime fans and students of wrestling history will recall how the WWF made up for poor domestic house show sales during the New Generation Era by touring international markets. The WWF relied on the incredible popularity of Bret “The Hitman” Hart to help make up for lackluster ticket sales in the United States.

Fans are buying plenty of tickets for Clash at the Castle (despite the WWE charging high prices and ticket agencies gouging charging fans high handling fees) which suggests the WWE should consider holding one or two premium events in international markets. While the travel logistics can be tricky, airing a RAW and/or SmackDown in the host country could generate revenue and make travel less hectic.

Although the circumstances that led to Money in the Bank moving to a smaller arena may be an isolated incident, the WWE needs to carefully plan its future shows in arenas.

With the WWE UK PPV setting records already, look for the WWE to eye foreign markets more carefully when it comes to scheduling big events and TV tapings (such as RAW and SmackDown).

Do you think the WWE should air more shows in international markets? If so, where? Let us know in the comments below.
