Another Report that WWE is Ending Stipulation Heavy PLEs

Is the WWE ending its Hell in a Cell events? WrestleVotes is reporting that the WWE has decided to end its annual premium live events (PLEs) that are based around the Hell in a Cell Match.

WrestleVotes is reporting:

The show itself, I think is completely dead. That match, from what I understand means a lot to Hunter, just think of the classics that he’s had in there. Roman Reigns & Jey so they’ve been feuding for six weeks, they got to be there now because the calendar says so… That’s not going to happen anymore

GiveMeSport’s Louis Dangoor (who is now working with WrestleVotes in a new collaboration) noted:

There has been a lot of talk about the new WWE leadership regime looking to do away with some gimmick pay-per-views, and Hell in a Cell looks to be top of that list.

Analysis: If this story is accurate, it’s another example of Triple H removing the constraints imposed on the WWE’s creative department by stipulation-based shows. While stipulation matches like Ladder Matches, Hell in a Cell Matches, and such can be excellent ways to enhance a feud, they can lead to awkward booking.

The Roman Reigns vs Jey Uso Hell in a Cell Match is just one example of how the WWE booked feuds in the Hell, simply because the show was coming up and the WWE had to book one or two matches in the hellacious structure.

While the Hell in a Cell shows have had some epic match-ups, there are many recent examples of badly-booked Cell showdowns including:

Seth Rollins vs The Fiend (2019)

The Fiend vs Seth Rollins wasn’t just the first match between the two, it featured one of the most despised finishes in the history of the Hell in a Cell Match. The match ended by referee stoppage despite Hell in a Cell Matches traditionally only ending by pinfall or submission.

Bayley vs Sasha Banks (2020)

The WWE spent months building up the Bayley vs Banks feud after the two dominated the WWE’s women’s division in 2020. This was the second match between the two (their previous match on TV had ended in a disqualification). While the match was good, the feud fizzled out with Bayley promising to renew it when she chose to, hardly the stuff of legend.

If the WWE does eliminate the Hell in a Cell PLEs, there’s no reason to think the match itself will fade away. The Hell in a Cell Match remains a fan favorite and will mean more when it is utilized to enhance a feud rather than to fill a card.

The WWE eliminated its TLC (Tables, Ladders, and Chairs) event from the schedule in 2021. With talk of Hell in a Cell vanishing and possibly Extreme Rules, it will be interesting to see what shows will take their place.

Fans may also be curious whether any other stipulation shows such as Elimination Chamber or Money in the Bank are being considered for the scrap heap.
