WWE Already Burying Vince McMahon?

Editorial: Recent “Rumors” Suggest WWE May Be in Damage Control

Is the WWE already burying Vince McMahon with “rumors” that the former WWE kingpin was out of touch and had off-the-wall ideas that had to be filtered by those around him?

In case you missed WrestleLamia’s analysis of the story, Vince is under investigation. The Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online’s Josh Nason noted:

Due to “certain unrecorded expenses” by Vince McMahon dating back to 2006, WWE announced Monday via a regulatory statement that they would restate several financial statements. The statements for 2019, 2020 and 2021 and the first quarter of 2022 would be revised. The expenses total $14.6 million which McMahon will pay back.

Take a look at a recent report from The Wall Street Journal about the investigation into Mr. McMahon’s spending.

WWE also said that an internal board investigation “expects to conclude that its internal control over financial reporting was not effective as a result of one or more material weaknesses.”

As I noted in yesterday’s article about the growing coverage of Mr. McMahon’s hush-money scandal, there are concerns the scandal could affect the WWE’s business dealings.

The big question is whether the current investigation into McMahon’s sex scandal will show a lack of oversight by the WWE’s Board of Directors.

If the investigation determines the Board knew about Vince’s shenanigans, the company could have a major mess on its hands.

The idea of an “old boys network” covering up for Vince would not go over well in the era of #MeToo, even if it has to deal with a “wrasslin'” company.

Now, rumors are making the rounds of an out-of-touch Vinnie Mac having to be filtered by those in creative. Fightful Select recently reported on this. Wrestling News’ Andrew Ravens summed up the Fightful story:

They heard from many people within the creative process who said that many of the creative writer’s assistants effectively needed to “filter” McMahon themselves in some ways as the assistants often had to know what to not write for McMahon while taking notes from him. It was said the “minutes are heavily edited.”

While I am not suggesting that someone is leaking stories about Vince being out of touch and anything but politically correct to deflect all the blame onto him, it’s something to consider, especially if more “rumors” reach the mainstream media.

There are any number of stories and rumors about Vince McMahon which suggest he’s out of touch and anything but politically correct. Some might even say it’s common knowledge.

For someone to suddenly report common knowledge as “news” is curious. I would argue it’s old news.

Nonetheless, if these rumors reach the mainstream media, people will have to ask if one or more individuals in the WWE are trying to throw Vince under the bus.

These rumors might prove counterproductive, especially if someone makes the argument that if Vince was out of touch, that he should at least have been monitored closer by those around him.

As much as the WWE wants to project an image of stability and all systems go, it is likely facing intense scrutiny.

What do you think of these rumors and is someone trying to bury Vince? Let us know in the comments below.
