“Toughest Man on Earth” Passes Away at Age 89

WrestleLamia is sad to announce the passing and professional wrestler “Judo” Gene LeBell.

LeBell won the AAU National Judo Championship in 1954 and 1955. The highly skilled martial artist entered professional wrestling due to its lucrative paydays. He was known for his work in the NWA’s Hollywood Wrestling territory, a promotion owned by his brother, Mike LeBell.

LeBell retired from wrestling in 1981 but continued working in Hollywood as a stuntman and the world of martial arts as a trainer and judge.

“Judo” Gene refereed the historic 1976 boxer vs. wrestler match between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki. He’s also known to younger fans for walking Ronda Rousey to the ring during her UFC career.

LeBell, who mentored and trained Rousey said of her:

“Ronda is the best woman I have ever been associated with, as far as fighting goes. So, when you see Ronda, tell her Gene sent you, that Uncle Gene sent you. But don’t get her mad. Don’t get her mad.”
