Epic Rematch Booked for Live Event and Not a Premium Live Event
Why is the Sami Zayn vs Roman Reigns rematch happening at a live event? Wouldn’t it make more sense to hold it at a premium live event?
According to Dave Meltzer, the Toronto show was underperforming in ticket sales. The box office results improved when Roman was announced for the show. Nonetheless, the WWE opted to change the scheduled Roman Reigns/Solo Sikoa vs Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens match to a singles match (H/T Ringside News)
The reason? The WWE was confident the Elimination Chamber rematch would sell even better than the tag match. Nonetheless, is the WWE making a mistake by booking this at a live event rather than trying to monetize it to the max?
The reality is that the WWE’s live events are still treated as disposable commodities. While the WWE does its best to make the events special, they rarely have any serious impact on WWE storylines.
For example, fans don’t see turns at live events. Normally, fans don’t see returns at live events. Finally, fans don’t see titles change hands at live events.
Roman Reigns has defended the Undisputed Championship at live events and gone on to wrestle the same opponent at a PLE. Often, these live events serve as a good warm-up for the PLE.
In this instance, the WWE is capitalizing on Sami’s popularity to spike ticket sales. This should not rule out a rematch at a PLE in the future.
If the WWE chooses to book a rematch at a PLE, it’s unlikely it will even mention the Toronto show. This is no different than any other live event. Ultimately, live events are designed to make money and entertain the fans. TV and PLEs are where storylines are advanced.
