Editorial: Does Vince McMahon Think He’s Returning to the WWE?

Time to look at five reasons why Vince McMahon thinks he’s returning to the WWE. Let’s look at the reasons why Vince McMahon thinks he’s returning to the company he walked away from this summer following the disclosure of his hush-money scandals and then examine why it’s not going to happen.

First, let’s look at why people are discussing McMahon’s apparent quest to return to the company he took to incredible levels. The Wall Street Journal article documenting two new sexual assault lawsuits filed against Vince McMahon also discussed the disgraced business owner’s plans to stage a return:

The 77-year-old Mr. McMahon also has told people that he intends to make a comeback at WWE, according to the people familiar with his comments. He has said that he received bad advice from people close to him to step down and that he now believes the allegations and investigations would have blown over had he stayed, these people said.

Why Vince Thinks He’s Returning to WWE

Here are five reasons Vince may feel it’s time for his big return. This is speculation based on Vince’s past behavior and his perception of himself.

Reason One: He’s the Majority Shareholder

Vince McMahon may feel he needs no other reason than that he’s the majority shareholder. As we’ve discussed in past videos about Mr. McMahon’s messes, this isn’t as cut-and-dry as it seems (and we’ll explore it in our section on the reasons why he won’t be back).

Reason Two: He Built the Company

Vince McMahon took his grandfather and his father’s company to unprecedented levels. He likely feels the company’s current success is due to his work and that nobody understands wrestling (or its fans) as he does. If the Wall Street Journal article’s report on McMahon’s desire to stage a comeback is accurate, he may feel he left far before his time. It’s even possible he feels he has something to teach whomever he selects as his successor.

Reason Three: The WWE Hasn’t Improved Without Him

While the WWE has done a good year in terms of business, McMahon likely feels that this is due to the business personnel he put he place i.e. Nick Khan and other dealmakers who have helped increase the WWE’s revenue through licensing, TV rights deals, and fees for holding PLEs in specific locations (such as Cardiff, Wales, which paid a premium to host Clash at the Castle).

McMahon may also feel that RAW and SmackDown’s ratings haven’t improved all that much. While there was certainly an improvement over the summer, McMahon may feel the numbers reflected the curiosity effect of fans tuning in to watch the new regime.

There’s certainly a case to be made that RAW’s ratings haven’t improved during Monday Night Football . As for SmackDown, the blue brand’s ratings are good but if the talk of the show not making money for FOX are accurate, the station could choose to pass when it’s time to renew its rights deal. Naturally, that old Vince McMahon magic will save the day (at least in Vince’s mind).

Reason Four: He Wants One Last Run Before Selling It

Could a reason for McMahon wanting to return have anything to do with eventually selling the company? Consider this, if McMahon feels he still has something (or much) to contribute to the WWE’s growth and success, he may feel the company will benefit from his stewardship, so much that the selling price will be higher than it might be today.

Reason Five: He’s Out of Touch

Another reason Vince likely thinks he’s going to return is that he’s been out of touch with reality for a long, long time. Indeed, one could argue that the previous four reasons are all fueled by McMahon’s false image of himself as someone who is in touch with the pulse of public opinion. Mr. McMahon has surrounded himself with yes men (and women) for so long that he’s developed what some critics say is an inability to see when he is wrong.

Why Vince Thinks He’s Returning to WWE: Why It Won’t Happen

Unfortunately for Vince McMahon, his return is unlikely to be as easy as he thinks. Let’s look at the five biggest reasons he won’t return to the company.

Reason One: The Company Has Done Fine Without Him

Has the WWE reached new heights without Vince McMahon? I’d say it hasn’t but it’s held its ground without him, despite concerns about what would happen when he eventually stepped down. The WWE has a bounce back in its step with its on-screen product and reportedly its backstage morale. While it’s too early to tell if the company will continue doing well, it’s done fine without Vince McMahon so far and there’s no reason to think it will do better should he return. Indeed, the potential problems caused by his return (which we’ll mention shortly) are reason enough to keep him at home.

Reason Two: There Are Many People with Vested Interests to Keep Him Away

While Vince McMahon may want to return to the WWE, there are several people with good reasons to keep him out of the picture. Stephanie McMahon and Triple H couldn’t be in a better spot as far as power goes (especially after what looked like a quiet coup to remove them). As for co-CEO Nick Khan, he may be enjoying his new role far too much to easily relinquish control. Even if he wanted to give it up, Triple H and Stephanie aren’t the only individuals who have benefited since Vince’s absence. A number of backstage personnel, executives, and wrestlers have returned following Vince’s departure, which should be reason enough to want him out of the company.

Reason Three: It Could Result in a Corporate Civil War

As melodramatic as it might sound, Vince McMahon staging a comeback could lead to a corporate civil war as board members argue over how to handle the situation. Mr. McMahon is likely to still have support on the board and possibly amongst shareholders with larger stakes. This could lead to a protracted power struggle which would likely hurt the company.

Reason Four: It Will Likely Damage the Stock Price

The WWE doesn’t want its stock to go down and largely since 2020, it has remained one of the most stable stocks on the market, making it a favorite amongst investors. If Mr. McMahon stages a comeback, it will likely damage the stock price due to the perception that the scenarios we mentioned are going to take place, leading to lawsuits, legal fees, and bad publicity.

Reason Five: He May Not Last through the Fight

Vince McMahon is 77 and no matter how badly he may want to resume control, he may not have the time to do so. First, it’s unknown whether federal authorities are planning on pursuing any civil or criminal charges against him for any alleged corporate wrongdoing. If so, he could be tied up in court for years. If that happens, he’d have to step down from any corporate role he regained.

Another problem is that while Vince’s mother lived a long life, there’s no telling how much longer Vinnie Mac has on the clock.
