Editorial: Speculation Over Undisputed Champion’s Next Challenger
Who’s Roman Reigns’ next opponent? Fans are asking his now that the Undisputed Champion has dispatched Drew McIntyre (at this point, it may be better to ask who Roman’s next victim is).
As I’ll show, some of Reigns’ potential opponents may want to stay away from a title match as it will do nothing for their career.
If you ask Ringside News’ Subhojeet Mukherjee, the answer is Kevin Owens. Mukherjee pointed out some comments KO made during the latest RAW Talk:
“My goal is the same as I stated a few weeks ago: I want to be a champion in WWE again. There are a lot of titles I’m gunning for. I’m gunning for all of them. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re usually not on Raw, your SmackDown gal? Okay, are you going to be at SmackDown this week? If you see Roman Reigns, can you do me a favor? Can you remind him that he owes me? You got it? I appreciate that.”

There’s something to Mukherjee’s belief as Owens has consistently commented on how he would have been champion had it not been for those meddling kids Paul Heyman and Jey Uso when KO battled Reigns at the 2021 Royal Rumble.
Triple H has been pushing Owens hard so don’t rule it out. Mukherjee pointed out that with Roman not scheduled for Extreme Rules, it’s likely his earliest title defense will be Crown Jewel.
Who’s Roman Reigns’ Next Opponent?
Another potential opponent is Roman’s old sparring partner, Braun Strowman. Strowman and Reigns have thrown down in the past. Their most recent encounter was at 2020’s Payback when he pinned Braun in a Triple Threat Match involving him and then-Universal Champion, The Fiend.
Now that Braun Strowman is back in the WWE, he’s not only a good candidate to challenge Reigns, but he announced he’s heading to SmackDown for the 9 September episode.
Analysis: If Owens or Strowman battles Reigns, it will be a subtle reminder how the WWE has exhausted its potential challengers for “The Tribal Chief.”
If the WWE chooses to keep the belt on Reigns until WrestleMania (or beyond), I would argue that Strowman and Owens have nothing to gain from wrestling him. There’s also the law of diminishing returns and how much interest fans will have in seeing Owens battle for a belt they doubt he will win.
There are of course other contenders available such as the recently-returned Karrion Kross. Again, does the WWE want to protect Kross by keeping him away from Reigns (perhaps putting him into a feud with Drew McIntyre) or does it want to make Karrion Reigns’ latest victim?
