Tony Khan Cries Anti-AEW Conspiracy

All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan is making the bold claim that there is an anti-AEW conspiracy afoot on social media, apparently aimed at disparaging AEW. Khan recently revealed on Twitter that:

In an exclusive story, Wrestling Inc.’s Eric Mutter spoke with Khan for more details about Khan’s claims:

Waiting for final study but here’s what my expert confirmed. It’s people with real live accounts making posts and then using their bots to manipulate the social channel algorithm by backing them up with engagement from a made-up Twitter identity.

Khan provided a layperson’s explanation of his claim,

“For example, I tweet Megha only eats rotten bananas. I throw say 18 bots behind it (which takes about 5 minutes to do) Twitter security can’t differentiate when done well (neither can most social teams). The problem becomes, every time people type Megha into the search bar, because of a real account supported by bots- the first suggested result would be tweets about Megha eating rotten bananas. I’m oversimplifying, but that’s the 5 cent version of what’s happening.”

“Diamond” Dave Meltzer discussed Khan’s claim during a recent Wrestling Observer Radio, pointing out that that it’s too early to scrutinize things.

“The study’s not done. What I understand is that he had a premonition of this, being that it’s kind of his field. Then he got somebody independent, an independent firm, and asked them to just kind of study stuff, including this. The thing is still ongoing, it is not concluded, but they did report to him, I guess probably today or yesterday, what he just reported.”

Naturally, WWE supporters are skeptical and some are pointing to this as what they see as another example of Tony Khan being thin-skinned when it comes to his product. AEW receives plenty of criticism online (much as the WWE does). Factor in the presence of trolls who like to talk trash about anything that will elicit a reaction (be it sports, politics, or music) and anti-AEW comments can be found all over the Internet.

On the other hand, Khan’s claim may have merit. After all, wrestling is full of examples of competitors trying to undercut each other whether it’s poaching talent, locking out competitors from holding events in key arenas, or undermining TV deals. Whether there is a social media campaign against AEW remains to be seen but it wouldn’t be the first time a promotion has tried to hamstring a rival.
