Steve Austin Reveals Why He Missed ‘Mania

“Stone Cold” Tells All to Sports Illustrated

Steve Austin reveals why he missed ‘Mania, breaking it down for Sports Illustrated. “The Texas Rattlesnake” made a spectacular return to the ring at WrestleMania XXXVIII. There, he battled Kevin Owens in an impromptu “No Holds Barred” Match after appearing on The KO Show.

The match was well-received and the WWE made efforts to bring “Stone Cold” back for this year’s “Showcase of the Immortals.” Despite reports the WWE was willing to throw a boatload of cash Austin’s way, he decided to pass. There were rumors that “The Bionic Redneck” would have faced Brock Lesnar or Roman Reigns. When those bouts allegedly fell through, there was talk of Austin delivering a beatdown to LA Knight.

Of course, none of those scenarios panned out. This led to talk about whether the WWE ever approached Austin about working at WrestleMania. Was this just another fake news story? Turns out there was plenty to the story.

The Magic of WrestleMania XXXVIII

Steve Austin recently talked to Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso about whether he was asked to work “The Show of Shows.” Austin answered:

“I haven’t spoken to this, but I’ll give you the story, I met with some people from WWE. We talked about the possibility of me wrestling at WrestleMania 39. The biggest thing in my mind was the presentation and what kind of match it was going to be.”

Austin had a fantastic experience at last year’s WrestleMania in Dallas. Many fans were impressed not only with Austin’s performance in (and out) of the ring but his overall physique. He told Sports Illustrated how things had worked out:

“Going back to 38, the way the KO thing was presented—I love KO—I turned that down three, four, five times until the creative finally came to what it ended up being. I didn’t want it constructed as a real match, per se. I needed something that could turn into one, and it did, but I think that’s why we got away with it. The Dallas crowd was very receptive. I hadn’t been around, so the timing was right.”

The timing was right in 2022. Unfortunately that wasn’t so this year.

Austin Talks About the Challenges of Preparing for WrestleMania

Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right for this year. Austin talked about filming a new TV show and the challenges of getting into ring shape:

“But to do a proper match, I’d have to be in off-the-charts shape. I told them, and this is the exact truth, I said, ‘Guys, I’m just fixin’ to go into production on this show, Stone Cold Takes on America, and until we start production, I don’t know what my life looks like. I can’t commit.’

“Stone Cold” said that his decision to skip ‘Mania was fortunate as his TV show wrapped up about a month late. He commented:

Working 15 hours a day, then getting in a 30- or 40-minute workout, that doesn’t get you ready for WrestleMania. I was really protected at WrestleMania 38. This time, that wasn’t going to be the case. That was a true statement: Until this show was over, I couldn’t commit.”

“Stone Cold’s” situation shows the problem with getting retired wrestler back into the ring, especially those who have active careers in other endeavors. Looking at Austin’s situation, the idea of The Rock finding time for WrestleMania is delusional.
