Real Reason Ronda Rousey Lost at WrestleMania

Ronda Rousey’s loss to SmackDown Women’s Champion at WrestleMania XXXVIII shocked some fans as the expectation was that Rousey would win the belt. Was the decision one of Mr. McMahon’s last-minute changes or something else? According to Dave Meltzer, the WWE wants to extend the program between Rousey and Flair and the promotion felt there was only one way to do this:

The idea is for this to be a long-term program and thus the belief was Flair had to win the first match, even if Flair got the better of Rousey as well in the angles leading up to it.

Meltzer has an interesting take on Rousey’s WWE return and the fans’ reaction to “Rowdy” Ronda’s return:

One thing that looks obvious is that Rousey is not going to be over and have the meaning she did when she first came.

It remains to be seen whether Meltzer’s musings pan out. No doubt the WWE doesn’t want the WWE Universe booing Rousey as it did late in her first WWE campaign. As history has shown, there is usually little a promotion can do once the fans start booing a babyface other than to turn them heel.At this point, the WWE has to take preventative measures to keep this from happening. Such measures include helping Rousey improve her promos and perhaps teaming her with a popular Superstar.

As for Rousey’s loss to Flair, it’s a tricky situation. Naturally, the WWE can’t have Rousey bury opponent after opponent but the company can’t afford to have her look weak either while she chases the title. The WWE’s booking of its women’s champions shows some promise as WrestleLamia feels the WWE made the right move in putting the RAW Women’s title on Bianca Belair after a long chase and it didn’t go with the obvious finish of Rousey beating Flair at ‘Mania.
