Gunther Wins Intercontinental Championship
Fans watching tonight’s SmackDown got to see a new Intercontinental Champion crowned as Gunther defeated Ricochet. The former United States and Intercontinental Champion was unable to throw back the big man’s challenge despite a spirited fight.
The WWE has been setting up a match between “The Future of Flight” and Gunther for several weeks, with both Superstars crossing paths several times.
Ricochet won the Intercontinental Championship on 4 March 2022 from Sami Zayn after an assist from Johnny Knoxville.
WrestleLamia noted earlier that Vince McMahon is said to be a big fan of Gunther so it will be interesting to see what’s next for the big man.
As for Ricochet, he enjoyed a three-month reign full of solid title defenses. Whether the WWE capitalizes on the momentum Ricochet enjoyed as Intercontinental Champion is on them. The blue brand can use more upper-card stars and Ricochet foots the bill.
Logically, Ricochet’s three-month reign would suggest the WWE has more faith in him than it did when he held the United States Championship for three weeks.
With a new Intercontinental Champion crowned (and a heel at that), SmackDown has a secondary title for the blue brand’s babyfaces to chase after.
