Is the CM Punk Story a Work?

Initial Reports Suggest It’s as Real as It Gets

Is the CM Punk story a work? After all, wrestling fans are used to being strung along by so-called shoots that turn out to be elaborate works.

Is the CM Punk Story a Work?

While some fans remain skeptical, Dave Meltzer talked about the situation on Wrestling Observer Radio:

It absolutely, 100% it’s not a work. I can tell you, there’s legal people involved – a lot of legal situations involved and it can be very messy. I think that’s one of the reasons why AEW is not allowed to talk about it.

H/T Ringside News

If an actual fight occurred, AEW’s legal team (not to mention the parties involved) will want to keep quiet about things. According to a Fightful Select report (H/T Ringside News), several WWE Superstars reached out to the Patreon-based account and stated they doubted it was a work.

Historical Shoots

Backstage fights are rare but there have been enough that WrestleLamia has covered many in our videos (not to mention in-ring shoots). Fans are likely familiar with Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels’ backstage fight, a situation that eventually led to The Montreal Screwjob.

Where things get tricky is when wrestlers have a real-life beef and promoters choose to exploit it as an angle. A good example is the Matt Hardy vs Edge feud from the mid-00s.

Recall, that Edge had an affair with Hardy’s girlfriend Lita, leading to considerable backstage heat and the WWE releasing Hardy. Hardy was brought back and the WWE built a feud out of the program.

Given wrestlers’ and promoters’ willingness to string the fans along to build heat, it’s understandable why some fans might be skeptical.

For now, fans will have to enjoy the speculation or choose to ignore it as some have.

Do you think this backstage altercation was real, a shoot, or a worked shoot? Let us know in the comments below.
