Tony Khan Talks More New Japan Shows, PPV’s, and Buyrates
Is Forbidden Door II coming? AEW President Tony Khan had a lot to discuss during his media call regarding the 26 June pay-per-view.
Khan discussed the possibility of a sequel show along with whether he approves of AEW stars holding New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) titles, whether there will be more frequent AEW pay-per-views, and just how well Forbidden Door is doing with advanced buyrates.
The Wrestling Observer Figure Four Online’s Josh Nason highlighted some of Khan’s comments including the following:
-Based on the success of ticket sales and buzz, he is already thinking about Forbidden Door II.
-Sunday isn’t a precursor to more AEW PPVs. Khan acknowledged more PPVs would increase revenue, but there’s no imminent increase coming.
-He is open to AEW wrestlers carrying NJPW titles and vice versa.
-PPV buys are right around the same number they usually are 72 hours out, but the big movement is in the next 48 hours.

Forbidden Door’s Unexpected Problems
As WrestleLamia discussed in a previous article, Forbidden Door has been snakebitten by a slew of setbacks, chief among them injuries to key personnel such as CM Punk and Bryan Danielson.
There have also been political problems such as AEW and New Japan being unable to utilize certain wrestlers such as Andrade El Idole because they worked for Lucha Libre promotion Triple A (AAA).
Lucha promotion CMLL works with New Japan and anyone who has worked for Triple A is apparently unable to work at Forbidden Door.
Wrestling Inc.’s Eric Mutter provided details on the political strife between AAA and CMLL:
As noted previously, AAA and CMLL have been at odds since AAA’s formation in 1992, which sprung from former CMLL wrestler turned booker Antonio Pena leaving to jumpstart AAA, while taking several top stars with him. Andrade had previously worked for CMLL as La Sombra from 2007 to 2015 but has since worked dates for AAA since joining AEW in 2021.
