This is a huge setback for AEW.
Sad news for AEW fans, as AEW World Champion, CM Punk is injured.
Last night on AEW Rampage, Punk announced that his injury will require surgery. Punk will be forced to relinquish the AEW World Title on a temporary basis.
There is a ton of confusion surrounding if Punk is relinquishing the title for good, but we can confirm this isn’t the case. This confusion came thanks to Jericho’s comment on commentary which referred to Punk giving up the title permanently.
This is when Excalibur attempted to clarify things. As things stand, Punk won’t be relinquishing the title. There will be a battle royal to kick off Wednesday’s Dynamite. The winner of that battle royal will face Jon Moxley in Wednesday’s main event. The winner of that match will move on to the interim World title match at the Forbidden Door PPV. At some point in the future, once Punk has recovered, Punk will face the interim champion in a unification match.
