Punk left WWE in 2014, and officially retired from pro wrestling until his AEW debut last year.
During his time in WWE, CM Punk was presented as one of their top stars. He had multiple World Title reigns, and even got to wrestle The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29.
Success in the company aside, during a recent interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Punk reflected on his run in WWE, and he would claim that it was a “waste”. The former WWE Champion stated:
“I feel like it was kind of wasted,” Punk said. “It could have been so much more. It should have been so much more. And now, this is everything I dreamed pro wrestling could and should be. And I’m here and I’m f*cking in the moment. I’m not thinking about tomorrow. I’m not worried about sh*t that happened yesterday. I’m living in the moment and I’m 100% in my f*cking prime, best I’ve ever been. I don’t run things. I don’t call shots. I don’t book sh*t. I just make towns. And I have a wealth of experience that I can draw from. I have a wealth of positive and negative experiences that I can draw from. I’m not sitting back trying to hold people back, politic or anything. I’m just literally trying to make this place better.” – H/T WrestlingInc
Punk is now set to face Hangman Adam Page tonight for the AEW World Title at the Double or Nothing PPV event.
I get it. Punk’s run may have been sullied by poor booking, but he at least won the WWE and World Heavyweight titles and had good runs with both. As for his AEW run, while it’s good that he’s happy there, he shouldn’t be AEW champ. He doesn’t need a world title, because he’s got nothing to prove. He’s already the full package. He’s charismatic, a great wrestler, and a great promo
