Sports Entertainer Defeats Professional Wrestler
A huge opener on Grand Slam as Chris Jericho wins the ROH World Championship from Claudio Castagnoli. Chris Jericho seems to have proven his adage that a sports entertainer will always beat a professional wrestler. Jericho lived up to his nickname “The Wizard” by pulling a win out of thin air.
Indeed, this match told the story of Chris Jericho bending and breaking every rule to gain the advantage, even using Ring of Honor Hall of Famer Cary Silkin as a human shield when Claudio battled Jericho outside the ring.
Jericho Wins ROH World Championship
The match was a fairly even affair as both men hit signature moves and went for submission wins. Claudio showed his incredible strength when he performed the swing on Jericho.
Things turned in Jericho’s favor when referee Aubrey Edwards barely avoided getting flattened by “The Swiss Superman.” “The Wizard” capitalized on the situation while Edwards’ back was turned, delivering a low blow followed by a Judas Effect to get the 1-2-3.
Fans of ROH’s “Code of Honor” won’t be happy that a rule-breaking wrestler like Jericho has captured the prestigious title.
