AEW Reveals Final Pieces in Intermin Championship Puzzle
AEW reveals its interim champion challengers in a final tweet, clearing up the confusion over who will compete to crown an Interim AEW World Heavyweight Championship while current AEW World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk undergoes surgery.
As WrestleLamia noted in a previous report, Punk was ready to relinquish the title but AEW President Tony Khan took things in a different direction, with AEW announcing:
Fans were initially confused about just who would face the winner. However, a recent tweet clarifies the situation as AEW reveals its interim champion challengers will be determined on the 8 June Dynamite and New Japan Pro Wrestling’s 12 June DOMINION event:
While rumor has it that Punk isn’t expected to be out for long, a surgical procedure can lead to various complications, making it difficult to establish a recovery timeline. AEW is wise in crowning an interim champion not only to make sure it has a world champion for the foreseeable future, but also for promotional purposes.
Now, Forbidden Door will have the added attraction of an AEW star and a New Japan Pro Wrestling star competing for AEW’s World Heavyweight Championship. AEW will also have a title unification match on tap for when Punk returns to the ring.
It will be interesting to see who competes in the battle royal as well as who goes on to the finals at Forbidden Door. Will AEW go with established stars such as Jon Moxley, Chris Jericho, or Bryan Danielson, or perhaps go with younger talent like Miro or Wardlow?
While some fans think that it’s unlikely that AEW will put its world title on a star from another promotion, fans shouldn’t be so quick to guess what’s next for the Interim AEW World Championship.
