And Five She Shouldn’t (If She’s Cleared to Wrestle)
There are ten AEW stars Saraya needs to wrestle (if she’s cleared to wrestle) if AEW wants to capitalize on her contract. The former WWE Superstar made waves when she competed as Paige, adding some much-needed variety to the cookie-cutter Divas division. Now, she’s ready to do the same in AEW with the right booking and the right opponents.
While WrestleLamia isn’t comparing AEW’s current women’s division to the WWE’s dreadful Divas Era (although AEW’s first year of women’s wrestling nearly as bad) there is no denying that the division could benefit from Saraya’s skills and showmanship.
She’s more than a fresh face, she’s a former main eventer with a strong fanbase who are likely to tune in just to watch her.
Saraya can do a lot in AEW besides wrestle but fans are hopeful she’s in the company to do more than manage, commentate, or participate in some other way as a non-wrestling personality.
The former Anti-Diva hasn’t confirmed that she’s able to compete but let’s say Tony Khan brought her in for more than her promos.
There are many wrestlers she can square off against but let’s focus on ten must-see matches.
Ten AEW Stars Saraya Needs to Wrestle
36-year-old Madison Rayne has accomplished much in her career including a memorable run as part of “The Beautiful People” in TNA and several reigns as the promotion’s Knockouts Champion. While Rayne is largely working as a coach in AEW, she still wrestles and a match with Saraya would be a good and entertaining tune-up match.
Although AEW seems to be heading for a Saraya vs Dr. Britt Baker confrontation, a feud with the women of the Jericho Appreciation Society would be a good program, either to lead up to a Baker match or as a sequel. Anna Jay could wrestle Saraya, leading to her BFF Tay Melo interfering.
As Jim Cornette has said, Sammy Guevara has a face fans want to punch and the same can be said for Guevara’s wife, Tay Melo. Melo is a fantastic heel and fans would love to see Saraya give her the comeuppance she’s had coming for a long time. They’d also get a hella match in the process. Throw in a tag match with Anna and Tay vs Saraya and Toni Storm and things could get even better.
While Ford hasn’t been used as much as her fans like, she always puts on a good match and does a fantastic job as a hellcat heel. Ford would be a good “one-and-done” opponent for Saraya in between programs with other stars.
Serena Deeb stands out from the pack thanks to her mastery of submission holds. While Saraya is no slouch as a wrestler, she would be sorely tested against Deeb and a win against Sereena would be the perfect stepping stone for Saraya’s eventual arrival at the top of our list.
Hikaru Shida vs anyone is always going to be a good match but Shida vs Saraya? Look out as this one could be the best match involving anyone on our list. Shida is sorely underutilized in AEW right now but a match against Saraya could help jog fans’ memories as to just how good she is.
By now you’ve probably noticed that there are several dream matches just waiting to happen between Saraya and AEW’s female wrestlers. One such match is Saraya vs Ruby Soho, which could start off as a technical event but devolve into a proverbial pier-six brawl.
AEW is going the slow route with Hayter leaving Dr. Britt so let’s hope the two are still together when AEW books Baker vs Saraya. There’s no money in Saraya facing Baker first. It makes more sense to have Baker send Hayter to soften Saraya up, leading to an inevitable two-on-one or three-on-one beatdown of Saraya.
Toni Storm can show up leading to a tag match between the teams of Hayter/Baker and Saraya/Storm.
Dr. Britt Baker
There’s no guessing whether AEW wants to book Britt vs Saraya first or save this one for somewhere down the line. Whenever it happens, it should be a momentous match as AEW’s top heel battles someone who could easily become AEW’s top babyface.
Saraya vs Dr. Britt Baker may seem like the Big Boss battle that AEW should set up but I would argue that if AEW books Storm as Saraya’s ally, it can lead to an even better “Big Boss” battle between the two.
Whether it’s a case of Storm resenting Saraya’s growing popularity or the two just wanting to see who is the best after months of teaming up (something that AEW seemed to be doing with Storm and Thunder Rosa), a Saraya vs Toni program could help cement Storm’s spot as a main eventer.
Five AEW Stars Saraya Shouldn’t Wrestle
An Abadon vs Saraya match would be difficult to pull off, not so much because of the clash of styles but because Abadon hasn’t been promoted on Dynamite (or even Rampage).
Kris Statlander has a lot to deal with right now as she recovers from her latest knee injury. If Statlander does return to wrestling, she’ll need to work a variety of matches to reestablish herself with AEW fans and a match against Saraya won’t help. It’s difficult to envision Saraya losing to Statlander and a loss to Saraya would hurt Kris’ momentum.
Current AEW World Champion Thunder Rosa isn’t a lousy wrestler but she’s shown that she doesn’t have what it takes to hang in the main event. While the stories of Rosa having backstage heat with at least two AEW female wrestlers have been disputed, why chance any backstage bickering?
Knowing Saraya’s history of neck injuries, AEW would be insane to put her at risk against a much-larger opponent like Rose. There’s no benefit to Saraya wrestling Rose and the two should never share a ring together, regardless of whether it’s a singles or tag team match.
It may be a cliche, but Jade Cargill is a generational talent that AEW needs to continue protecting. Saraya’s losses should be kept to a minimum but Jade’s first loss should be saved for a younger star that AEW wants to take to the next level. Saraya isn’t an old maid but she doesn’t need the rub from defeating Cargill. If AEW has Saraya defeat Jade, it’s hot-shot booking at its worst.
